Google just turned SEO upside down again

Yes, that’s right . . . Google just turned SEO upside down again!

One thing that you can be sure of is that Google will keep changing things.

But there is one constant in all of this, and if you follow this you should be reasonably safe, and that is . . .

CONTENT IS KING

We have said it before 100 times, and we will say it again . . .

CONTENT IS KING

That’s right!

Regardless of all the fancy schmancy SEO techniques, you still cannot beat good, old fashioned CONTENT for Google results.

Google is a search engine and it wants to help people find the information that they are searching for.

Provide that information and you are way ahead already.

The Hummingbird Update

On Sept 24, Google introduced the Hummingbord Update, so named because Google says it is “precise and fast”.

In summary, this update moves closer towards providing the precise information that searchers are looking for.

Conversational Search

So . . .

if you type in “Places to buy an iPad near my home”, Google will look at this more closely.

Rather than just providing a list of websites that sell iPads, Google will:

  • see that you are probably looking for a shop (“place”) rather than a website

  • look for places that are “near you”

The goal being to provide results that more accurately match the search questions.

This is called a “Conversational Search”.

You can read more about the Hummingbird algorithm update at Search Engine Land.

Keyword Results

Another big change that has come out is that Google is limiting or stopping the supply of Keyword Information.

In the past, Google has provided information about what keywords people are using to search with, making it easier for SEO techs to target those keywords.

The impact of this change on SEO remains to be seen.

SEO technicians have used Keyword Research in an attempt to second guess what Google will do and provide the information that Google wants.

This change further supports the idea that Google is moving towards Conversations, not Keywords.

Well, that is quite simple really!

What should you do now?

  1. Keep building quality CONTENT in your website.

Deleted or Not Deleted

Deleted or Not Deleted – that is the question!

When you delete a file on your computer, it disappears from your screen.

And so you think it is gone . . .

300px Hard drive en.svg

English: Diagram of a computer hard disk drive (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

But the reality is that the file is not really GONE as such.

Your computer has just “forgotten” where it is.

It’s a bit like when you plant seeds in the garden.

They are gone, and if they are small seeds, you likely cannot see them or find them again.

And yet, sure enough, in a few days or weeks, those seeds will sprout into plants in your garden.

Not really deleted

So deleted files are not really deleted.  The computer just forgets where they are stored on your hard drive.

Eventually, when you save new files on your hard drive, the old files will become overwritten.

But even then it may be possible to retrieve the parts of the deleted files that are not overwritten.

What does it mean?

Well, the good part is that you can recover your files, and . . .

the bad part is that you can recover your files.

The good part . . .

When you delete a file, it usually goes in the Recycle Bin.  And you can usually retrieve a file from there if you decided that you really did want the file.

Every so often, you should clean out the Recycle Bin to stop your computer getting cluttered.  Hey!  It’s a bin just like any other bin in the office or at home.

Even then, after the files have been deleted from the Recycle Bin, a computer tech may be able to recover them because the files are still stored on the hard drive.  Only the pointer to where they are stored has been deleted.

300px Java roaming profile bloat

Example of a third-party software (Sun Microsystems Java) storing temporary files and software updates in the roaming profile. The bloated roaming profile makes login and logout times increased. The stored updates shown are unnecessary after installation, yet they are not deleted. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The bad part . . .

And the bad part is exactly the same thing, but for different reasons.

If you have sensitive business or personal information on your computer, you may think that it has been deleted and no longer exists.

But the reality is that it still does exist, and using hard drive scanning software, it may be possible to retrieve some or all of the file.

So don’t just assume that your deleted file(s) is gone.  It may not be!

So . . .

What to do about it?

The ultimate solution is going to cost some money, so . . . firstly, decide if your files are important enough to warrant the extra precautions.

If you are developing a new product, or a new marketing campaign, where the stakes are high . . . then it might be worthwhile.

If you store client information that you are required to keep confidential . . . then it might be worthwhile.

If there is anything personal or private on your computer that you don’t want others seeing . . . then it might be worthwhile.

The solution is to buy and use software that overwrites the existing file with blank files . . . multiple times.  Eventually, there is no magnet trace of the file on the hard drive surface.

For most computer users, that is overkill, and it is enough to know that you can retrieve that folder of family holiday snaps that you accidentally deleted.

Well, that is quite simple really!

.

What should you do now?

  1. Evaluate how sensitive the information on your computer really is, and take action accordingly.

Do not download new iPhone iOS7

Do not download the new Apple iPhone iOS 7 . . . well, at least not just yet.

Not that there is anything majorly wrong with it.

It’s just that with a lifetime in the IT industry, I always recommend not to be the first to try out new software.

There is always going to be some small bug or problem that needs to be fixed. And if …

you are an early taker of new software, you will be the person finding out about that bug.

Usually the hard way!

So I always say, let somebody else find and report the bugs and get them fixed first.

Case in point – the new Apple iPhone software already has a bug identified only hours after it’s been launched.

http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/mobiles/ios-7-security-flaws-uncovered-as-new-iphones-released-20130920-2u3ed.html

Users booting up their newly released iPhone 5s or iPhone 5c on Friday will be prompted to install a minor operating system update, intended to squash a few minor bugs Apple discovered with its latest handsets.

http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/09/20/day-one-ios-701-update-for-iphone-5s-5c-patches-launch-bugs

So do not be too quick to rush in with new software updates.

Wait a few days and then Google for details on the updates.  You will surely find reports of how it is going.

You will need some time

The other reason not to get into downloading the new iOS 7 is that you will need a lot of time to:

  1. download it and

  2. familiarise yourself with it

Allow several hours for the software download, (depending on your download speed), which means several hours that you are not able to use your iPhone.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/20/ios-7-downloads-college_n_3962978.html?utm_hp_ref=college

So if you casually hit update during a workday, prepare to stop work.

And make sure to do it on your home or office wi-fi because it will chew up a lot of your mobile data allocation.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/10319852/iOS-7-how-to-install-the-new-software-for-iPhone-and-iPad.html

The second delay . . .

becoming sufficiently familiar with the new software to use it

The look and feel of the new software is totally different to earlier versions, and some functionality has changed.

It’s a bit like driving a right hand drive vehicle for the first time after you’ve spent your life driving a left hand drive.

Certainly not impossible, but it takes a bit of getting used to.

Having said that, there are some great new features in the software update.

Here are the Top 10 features in Apple iOS 7

Whatever you do, I hope that you enjoy using the new software.

Well, that is quite simple really!

What should you do now?

Has no-one worked this out yet ??

I am truly astounded that no-one has worked this out yet . . .

When you send an sms there is no signature file attached to the sms.

And what that means is that if . . .

300px Mobile phone keyboard.svg 1

English: based on the graphics by tomta1 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

the sending phone number is not in the recipient’s phone contacts, the recipient has no idea who the sms came from.

With the advent of mobile phones with contact lists, we got out of the habit of memorising or even remembering phone numbers.

Therefore, very few people will recognise you as the sender of an sms from the phone number alone.

Why is this important?

Not the least would be the number of sms scams going around – an unidentified sms may be deleted instantly.

In a business context, it means that your sms to a client or potential client may get ignored, or at least deferred . . . which could mean lost sales for your business.

A solution

There is a simple solution – sign your sms.

When people who know me get an sms from me, it always ends with -

Regards . . . Philip

If they don’t know me, then I will add a further hint, like our business name.

Make it easy to do

Typing out an sms is laborious at best, and adding more text is a pain!

So . . .

1.  Use the voice activation option on your mobile phone.

On the iPhone and iPad, this is a microphone icon in the lower left corner of the keyboard.

2.  Use the Shortcuts option on your device

On the iPhone, click on

Settings > General > Keyboard > Shortcuts > + (plus sign to add a new shortcut)

Create a shortcut that converts an unusual string of characters, like rpp, into a phrase, like Regards . . . Philip

And yes, that is quite simple really!

More ideas

Set up shortcuts to insert your website address into an sms to make it easier for your clients to find you.

e.g. on my phone

Business Networking Tips 12

Business Networking works in two ways.

One is where you just happened to meet the right person at the meeting who is looking for your product or services right now.

These serendipitous meetings are always welcome, because they quite often lead to a quick sale.

However, the real value in business networking is . . .

hospital (Photo credit: sancho_panza)

in building relationships with people who will refer you to other customers, and not just being a customer themselves.

And as we have discussed elsewhere in this blog, these relationships are built over time with frequent interactions.

You, or your BDM or salesperson, needs to turn up regularly at the business networking meetings for you to build these relationships and create a presence for your business in the group.

Which draws us to the point of this particular article.

If you cannot attend a business networking meeting for health, holidays or any reason, then send along a stand-in to represent your business.

They introduce themselves by their own name, but representing you and your business.

For example “Hi, I am Fred Smith standing in for Jane Green from ABC Enterprises.”

You should also provide any appropriate materials for your stand-in to use, including:

  • a script for the 30 second promotional talk

  • business cards

The stand in would ideally be another member of your business . . .

Or someone who knows your business quite well.

It might be your husband / wife, or a neighbour or friend, or even a raving fan customer.

The goal is to maintain the presence of your business in the group.
To stay front of mind with members of the group.

Do it now

Oh, and because you usually only need a stand-in in an emergency situation, get it organised ahead of time.

If you do not have staff at your disposal to send along at short notice, speak to someone now and ask if they would be willing to do this for you when the time comes.

Another Hot Tip

Most of these groups are pretty hot on keeping your promotional talk to the time limit, which may be 60 seconds, 30 seconds or even 15 seconds.

So make sure that you read through the script that you provide before you give it to your stand-in.

Time it and make sure he or she can get through it in the allotted time.

Well, that is quite simple really!

What should you do now?

Find what worked before and do it again now

This came up in one of our Marketing Review client meetings – “Find what worked before and do it again now”

A new client had been bemoaning their lower that expected sales for the quarter.  So we asked . . .

6292414621 fe56b210c1 m1

Coach Boeheim Lays Out a Plan (Photo credit: MattBritt00)

“What did you do before that worked?”

They responded . . .

“Well, when we call our past clients or send out cards by post, we always make some good sales.”

We came back with . . .

“Then do more of that!”

It is so simple and yet so easily overlooked in business and sales . . . that

the things that worked before, will usually work again!

It then becomes just a matter of repetition.  Repeating the sales process over and over, and making the sales.

Now, it is true that some things do change over time, so always Test and Measure your results.

But it just makes good sense to

. . . find what worked before and do it again now!

So, if you are looking to improve your results in these so-called “tough pre-election times”, then take a look at what you’ve done in the past to generate more sales.

And since elections come around regularly and they do seem to have a depressing effect on the economy, take a good note of anything that you have done in the last couple of months that generated new sales.

Because you are probably going to need those strategies again in another 3 years time !! LOL

Marketing Review

The Marketing Review client meeting is a quarterly meeting that we have with our clients.

Although the primary focus is on the website and how to make it work even better for the client . . . our advisers often put on their business coaching and/or personal coaching hats and get talking about other factors that are affecting the business and discuss ways to change or improve these areas too.

At Hotpink Websites, we are much, much more than just a website company!

Well, that is quite simple really!

.

What should you do now?

  1. Think about what has worked for you before.

  2. And then do more of that now.

  3. Want some help or ideas? Just contact us at Hotpink Websites now.
